Nova Scotia Driving Learner's License Practice Exam

Merging safely onto a highway is an important skill for drivers to master. Yielding to traffic already on the highway is crucial because it ensures that you do not disrupt the flow of traffic. Highways often have vehicles traveling at high speeds, and merging without yielding could lead to collisions or create hazardous situations. By yielding, you allow existing traffic to pass and create a larger gap for you to enter safely.

Accelerating as you approach the merge lane can help build your speed to match that of the highway, but it should be done with caution and consideration of the traffic around you. Proper signaling is essential, but it should always occur before merging, allowing others to anticipate your actions. Finally, stopping to check for an opening is unsafe, as it can create confusion and increase the risk of an accident; a smooth approach while looking for gaps is far more effective. Thus, yielding to existing traffic is the best practice for a safe merge onto the highway.
